Translating a text has always been a time-consuming and tiring task. However, with the advent of the Internet, translation has become much more convenient and faster. Google Translate is an online tool that provides a free, fast and accessible service for translating text from one language to another. What’s more, Google Translate is also an excellent website for learning the basics of a new language. However, using Google Translate does have its drawbacks. In this article, find out my opinion on Google Translate.
What is Google Translate?
You’re wondering what I think of Google Traduction ? Before we discover the answer, let’s get to know this tool first.
Google Traduction is a translation service available in over 100 languages. Now you can use 59 different languages when you’re offline.
This Google service was launched by this net giant on April 28, 2006. Since then, it has been translating whole sentences at a time, making it a very useful tool for bilinguals. What’s more, it’s available free of charge via a Gmail account.
Google Translation has many use cases in the professional environment. These include translating corporate websites and product descriptions into other languages. It can also be used to translate business and personal e-mails between employees. And that’s not all: this tool also lets you translate speech into text.
How does Google Translate work?
As mentioned above in the presentation of the tool and by its very name, Google Traduction is used to translate texts. More broadly, it performs this translation automatically. All you have to do is select your source and target languages, and then enter your text. For this last step, it offers various input methods, namely :
Text entry
This option lets you write or copy your text in the area reserved for this purpose. You can also translate an entire document by selecting the “Document” option. However, the text must not exceed 5,000 characters.
Visual and image translation
This involves capturing or importing photos containing the texts you wish to translate. Whatever you choose, this option lets you translate your documents instantly.
Handwriting
This is an easier solution if you’re not very comfortable with keyboards. In fact, handwriting allows you to draw the characters to be translated on the touch screen of your computer or tablet.
Voice transcription
Voice transcription is an efficient way to have a written translation of an audio file in another language. So you don’t have to do the work twice. In fact, this Google tool will do it all at once and in record time.
Anyway, regardless of the input method you choose, the tool only comes up with a rather literal result. That is to say, it performs a word-for-word translation.
What are the pros and cons of Google Translate?
Like any online tool, Google Traduction also has its share of advantages and disadvantages. Let’s take a closer look!
Advantages
When it comes to translating texts, Google’s translation tool offers several notable advantages. Firstly, it offers a vast choice of languages, covering over 100 different languages. This enables users to translate between a variety of language combinations, facilitating international communication. In addition, Google Translate stands out for its speed, delivering translation results almost instantaneously, which is crucial for real-time communication needs. Users can also choose from several input methods, such as typing, voice recognition or even camera-based translation support for printed text.
This versatility extends its use to different contexts and devices, including smartphones, making it accessible anywhere, anytime. Finally, one of Google Translate’s greatest advantages is that it’s completely free, offering free and unlimited access to its translation features for users all over the world.
It’s a great way to get the most out of Google Translate.
Disadvantages
Despite its many advantages, Google Translate has several significant drawbacks. Firstly, the tool generally fails to take into account the context in which words are used, which can lead to inaccurate or imprecise translations, particularly for complex or technical texts.
In addition, Google Translate often offers word-by-word translations, which may not faithfully convey the overall meaning of a sentence or an entire text. It also tends to confuse expressions, especially synonyms and homonyms, which can alter the original meaning of the text. Finally, although Google Translate is highly versatile, its translation capability may be limited for less commonly used languages or for very specific texts requiring more in-depth linguistic expertise.
How much does Google Translate cost?
Google Translation is free for individual use, enabling instant translation of words, phrases and web pages between over 100 languages. For enterprises and developers wishing to integrate Google Cloud Translation API into their applications, charges are calculated according to translation volume, with costs starting at around $20 per million characters for high volumes.
What do I think of Google Translation?
Google Traduction is widely used for its speed and free availability, but it also has some significant drawbacks. Firstly, it doesn’t take into account the context of the document to be translated, which can lead to inaccurate translations. What’s more, its word-by-word translation method can often produce meaningless results, complicating interpretation. In addition, Google Translate tends to confuse expressions, which can alter the original meaning of the text. Finally, its limited ability to translate large documents can lead to inefficiencies in terms of time management and document handling.
So, my opinion on Google Translate is that it always requires the assistance of a professional. This means you shouldn’t rely solely on the result you get. Which is to say that the tool, despite its many advantages, cannot replace a real translator. In fact, if you’re looking for one, visit BeFreelancr or TextMaster.
