LocoTranslate is one of the best-known free WordPress extensions. It’s not new to any site owner using this open source CMS. But if you’d like to become more familiar with it, read this article. You’ll find everything you need to know about it, as well as my review of LocoTranslate.

What is LocoTranslate?

LocoTranslate is a WordPress extension allowing you to translate your themes as well as your plugins. You can access it for free. Now installed by millions of users, LocoTranslate doesn’t limit itself to just this translation. In fact, it also lets you customize the languages already available on your page.

What are LocoTranslate’s main features?

Do you want to know what I think of LocoTranslate? First, let’s take a look at the tool’s various features. LocoTranslate is a tool for managing the various system files on your computer, including their transfer. As a result, it guarantees the security of obtaining information and saving your page.

Not only that, but LocoTranslate can evaluate your theme and design a file to collect the content to be translated. To do this, it sets up a secure expressions directory in which you can save the translations you’ve made. That’s why it’s often referred to as file storage.

Finally, one of LocoTranslate’s features also involves generating language files and updating them. What’s more, you can perform these operations directly within an extension.

How to translate your theme with LocoTranslate

For a better user experience, find out in the following how to translate your WordPress themes with LocoTranslate.

Install LocoTranslate

Installing LocoTranslate is relatively easy, because all you have to do is go to the WordPress bulletin board. Then search for the “LocoTranslate” plug-in from the search bar to save time. Once it appears, click on the “install now” button, then activate it.

Check if you can use your theme with the extension

To begin your verification, please follow these steps:

First access the cPanel from your hosting account (please make sure you’re in the directory where WordPress is installed).

Next, enter the file manager, then wp-content, theme and map with your time name to access the “languages” folder.

Afterwards, look for a file, any file, but one that is named according to your theme and with the extension “.pot”?

This way, you can check whether there’s already a translation or not. But don’t limit yourself to .pot files, do your checks even if your themes don’t include this type of document.

Check the configuration of your LocoTranslate folders

Such a step should always come before your translation. By checking the plugin’s folders, you can be sure that your translations won’t be overwritten, even after an update.

To do this, access the cPanel to the “languages” folder as before. From there, enter “loco” and then the “theme” folder. Only the existence of the latter can indicate that your configuration is optimal, even if it’s empty.

Start your translation on LocoTranslate

Once you’ve completed these steps, you can start translating your theme or possibly your plugins.

To do this, access your bulletin board where the available LocoTranslate options are located. Navigate to themes and plug-ins respectively to take over their translation.

For themes in particular, simply click on the installed theme you’re interested in. You’ll then be presented with a list of languages. The languages in question are those into which this theme has already been partially or fully translated.

If one of these languages interests you, you can optimize the translation of your theme.

But in the event that your target language isn’t present in the proposed list, click on new language. To do this, you have the choice between the list proposed by WordPress or the list you’ve customized.

What do we think of LocoTranslate?

Before sharing my review of LocoTranslate, it’s important to highlight the features of this tool. They are all very interesting on the one hand, and are very accessible.

As for the steps involved in translating your themes and plug-ins, they’re easy to undertake. What’s more, once you’ve completed your checks, you don’t have to do it again. You can get straight down to translating the themes and plug-ins.

What’s more, LocoTranslate has the advantage of being free. But this access mode greatly limits its functionality. Indeed, the fact that it can only translate these two parts is testimony to this. This means that you can’t actually have a multilingual site.

At the end of the day, LocoTranslate gives you the opportunity to get to grips with WordPress extensions. But you’ll need another one to fully translate your site. By the way, if you need a good translator for your sites, search on BeFreelancr (review article).
